One of the most common questions we get at Hamilton Insurance is: “When should I sign up for Medicare?” The answer depends on your age, current coverage, and whether you’re already receiving Social Security. Missing a deadline could mean late penalties or lapses in coverage — so let’s break it down.
1. Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
Your Initial Enrollment Period is your first chance to sign up. It’s a 7-month window that starts:
-
3 months before your 65th birthday month
-
Includes your birthday month
-
Ends 3 months after
You should sign up during this window to avoid late enrollment penalties — especially for Part B and Part D (prescription drug coverage).
2. General Enrollment Period (GEP)
Missed your IEP? You can still enroll in Medicare Parts A and B during the General Enrollment Period, which runs from January 1 to March 31 each year.
However, coverage doesn’t begin until July 1, and late enrollment penalties may apply.
3. Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
Each year, from October 15 to December 7, you can:
-
Join, drop, or switch Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans
-
Add, drop, or switch a Part D prescription drug plan
Changes made during AEP go into effect January 1 of the next year.
4. Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA-OEP)
If you’re already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you have a chance to make one change between January 1 and March 31 each year.
You can:
-
Switch to another Medicare Advantage plan
-
Go back to Original Medicare and add a Part D plan
5. Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)
You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you:
-
Retire and lose employer coverage
-
Move out of your plan’s service area
-
Become eligible for Medicaid or Extra Help
-
Experience other life changes
These windows are unique to your situation — and Hamilton Insurance can help determine if you qualify.
Why Enrollment Timing Matters
Choosing the right plan is important — but choosing it at the right time is critical. Delaying enrollment can lead to:
-
Higher premiums for life (especially Part B and D)
-
Gaps in prescription or doctor coverage
-
Missed opportunities for added benefits
